The purpose of a book is to preserve the memories of mankind. To
tell our tale of two cities we have made a collection of books which
we feel express our memories of Minnechaug. This may sound bad,
but we were obligated to write this, the morning after, and the day
it was due in Kansas.
Rick, you want some breakfast? 1. . .
2. . . 3. . . 4. . . 5. . . click. . . No thanks.
In jail, without bail. . . never fail catch
a snail. . . HAIL THE EDITORS! ! Where's
Dave? We forgot to pick him up! Who
wears skin-tone socks and T-shirts?

A Walk With Me
. . if a little frog winks
as you pass by. . .
or you wish he would. . .
then this book is dedicated
to you. . .
Let's just wander here and there. . .
stones on the beach. . .
flowers turning into berries. . .

. . from the winds we'll catch a bit
of that wondrous feeling that comes.
. . . not from seeing. . .
but from being part of nature.
. . and the whole world becomes
a fairyland of mushrooms. . .
among dead leaves. . . on fallen trees
that these things which have lived may
return to the earth. . . to live again. . .
There is something mysteriously-
beautiful about a dead tree
... as it stands no longer resisting
the winds that strip its bark
and twist its trunk. . . J
In sunshine. . . rain. . . or snow. .1
it seems to suggest a power I'
long after life has gone. . .
the spiders that
work all
night
spinning webs that
will be
jeweled with
the morning dew. .

In the deep
woods. . . all seems
so still. . . Leaves rustle
a bit-and a chipmunk runs.
a little toad
sits on the deep green
moss. . . and you
are not alone.
It's times like these
that you come to
know. . how much a part of
everything you are. . .
. . . how much all things
are part of you.
. . . and the years go by. . . as each stone
travels ever towards the sea. . . it may move with
extreme slowness. . . or rest for ages in the field or lake,
it matters not. . .
T.I-

For nature has ample time on which
to draw. . . but always. . . that which it has
created must return. . . to be created anew. .
... for that is the law of the universe. . .

. . . and the sun shall rise each dawn,
yet. . . this day is a new creation
in the pattern of constant change. .
nothing is new. . nothing is old
this is life. . .
and this is eternity.
12
. . . and a new tree is growing. . .
a tree that in many years to come will
stand upright in majestic individuality. . .
and bring inspiration to all who see. .
as long as there are trees in tiny seeds,
there will be miracles on earth.
13
And there is calm. . . deep still serenity. . .
a calmness that is felt. . . rather than understood.
14
and so. . . there has ever been
beauty in a feather drifting
in the wind. . . beauty in the
lichens growing on a rock. . .
beauty in the star dust
shining in the sun. . .
beauty in the grasses
blowing in a breeze. . .
so. . . there will ever be
wondrous. . . simple, beauty. .
always here in earth.
In Memory of Richard Carroll. . .
That which is beautiful will never die, can never die.

THE MIRROR
"Between the woods the afternoon
Is fallen in a golden swoon.
The sun looks down from quiet skies
To where a quiet water lies,
And silent trees stoop down to trees.
And there I saw a white swan make
Another white swan in the lake;
And, breast to breast, both motionless,
They waited for the wind's caress. . .
And all the water was at ease. '

'Halfway down the stairs
Is a stair
Where I sit.
There isn't any
Other stair
Quite like
It.
I'm not at the bottom,
I'm not at the top;
So this is the stair
Where
I always
Stop.
Halfway up the stairs
Isn't up,
And isn't down.
It isn't in the nursery,
It isn't in the town.
And all sorts of funny thoughts
Run round my head:
"It isn't really
Anywhere !
It's somewhere else
Instead!"'

"Where am I going? I don't quite know.
Down to the stream where the king- cups grow-
Up on the hill where the pine trees blow-
Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know.
Where am I going? The clouds sail by,
Little ones, baby ones, over the sky.
Where am I going? The shadows pass,
Little ones, baby ones, over the grass.
If you were a cloud, and sailed up there,
You'd sail on water as blue as air,
And you'd see me here in the fields and say:
"Doesn't the sky look green to-day?"
Where am I going? The high rooks call:
"It's awful fun to be born at all. "
Where am I going? The ring-doves coo:
"We do have beautiful things to do. "
If you were a bird, and lived on high,
You'd lean on the wind when the wind came by,
You'd say to the wind when it took you away:
"That's where I wanted to go to-day!"
Where am I going? I don't quite know.
What does it matter where people go?
Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow-
Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know. "

"Has anybody seen my mouse?
I opened his box for half a minute,
Just to make sure he was really in it,
And while I was looking, he jumped outside!
I tried to catch him, I tried, I tried. . .
I think he's somewhere about the house.
Has anyone seen my mouse?"

O OPTICIANS
160
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may
be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all per-
sons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and list to others, even the dull and
ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are
vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others you may become
vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own ca-
reer, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let
this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and
everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrend-
ering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden mis-
fortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fa-
tigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a
right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is
unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive
Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of
life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
